Bike Racks

A bicycle rack is a device to which one attaches a bicycle, to prevent theft. The rack is in turn fixed to the ground or a building wall. Often, in major urban areas, bike racks are a source of theft. A bicycle rack is also a device for transporting bicycles, attached to an automobile or bus. Finally, a bicycle rack can be a device latched onto the bicycle, to which cargo or panniers can be attached. Utility bicycles and touring bicycles use this device often.

To reduce theft, where cycling is popular and encouraged, cycle-parking facilities with bicycle racks, lockable mini-garages, and patrolled cycle parks are used. Cycling is promoted by local governments by permitting public transport to carry bicycles or by provision of external attachment devices on public transport vehicles. Conversely, cyclists from cities with low modal share of cycling complain of the absence of secure cycle-parking.

Early models used to provide for securing one wheel, like a grooved piece of concrete in the ground, or a forked piece of metal into which a wheel of the bicycle is secured. These were not foolproof, since a thief could steal the bicycle by detaching the wheel in question to free the rest of the bicycle. The support offered is also suspect, since rows of bicycles in this type of rack are prone to all being toppled in a domino effect. Cyclists call these types of racks "wheel benders." The more modern version was pioneered in Sheffield in England and is known as the "Sheffield rack," They are made of a thick metal bar shaped like a square arch. The support to the bicycle and the securing of the frame is due to the top part, which is about level with the top bar of the bicycle frame.
