featured article
Bicycle tours are a type of group athletic activity involving vacations (holidays) on bicycles. Private companies located primarily in the United States and Europe organizes these type tours. Though there is a strong history of bicycle tours throughout Europe, many sources attribute the rise of bicycling in the United States to Lance Armstrong and his seven Tour de France wins. Normally, on most private tours the participants ride their bicycles throughout the day and then stay at a bed-and-breakfast, inn, hotel or campground each night. The touring company provides lodging, most meals, directions and luggage transportation.
Prices start at $125 (US) per person per night and go up to $300 per person based on a survey of Internet websites in January 2007. Though the quality of the tours seem to be consistent throughout all touring companies the smaller companies with less overhead seem to have a price advantage over the large competitors due to lack of overhead. Also, those companies with headquarters based in the Southeastern United States seem to have a substantial price advantage over those based in the Northeastern or Pacific Coast of the United States or in Europe based on Internet surveys in January 2007.
